Ruth Roman was born in Lynn, Massachusetts, the third youngest daughter of Lithuanian-Jewish parents Mary Pauline (Gold) and Abraham Roman. Ruth was a small teenager when her father who was employed as an carnival barker, died. Her mother had to take on jobs such as waitressing and cleaning. Ruth went to school and was poor throughout Boston Massachusetts' tenement districts. She left the institution she was in just two years later to pursue the profession of acting. Her chosen path proved to be strewn with obstacles and in New York, she obtained a job posing for stills in a magazine for crime However, the stage was not a match for her. After working as a hat-check girl in a nightclub, she resigned and went back to Boston. In the New England Repertory Company was her first gig as an actor who was steady. Earned money performing during the daytime as an usherette. She received a master's certificate in drama at Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
